Welcome to the not so glamorous world of histamine reactions. So, what is a histamine reaction regarding sugaring? Well, a histamine reaction is defined as ‘A condition in which the immune system reacts abnormally to a foreign substance.’ Which in our case is our body’s reaction to having hair pulled out of it. You might be asking yourself, “What even IS histamine?” Histamine is a hormonal compound designed to help get rid of something that bothering you or your skin. Your bodies intentions are good, in that it is trying to keep you safe. However sometimes it has a tendency to overreact to certain situations which is why sometimes we can see red bumps, hives or swelling after getting sugared.
What can we do to prevent getting a histamine reaction? Firstly, ideally 15 minutes before treatment use the CC’me ‘Calm & Cool Me’ balm to ease discomfort and calm potential reactions. Secondly, right after treatment use a warm salt compress to sooth and calm area and prevent bacteria from getting in the affected area. Thirdly, apply mud puddle for 20 minutes as it decreases histamine being produced in the body as well as being anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Lastly increase frequency of visits as this is encourage the skin to respond more positively as well as sugaring decreasing hair growth meaning less to be pulled out.
